One thing I desire in my heart is to know what a true life of peace feels like. Is peace an achievable thing? In the face of tragedy or loss, can we have peace? The writer of this old hymn lost all 4 of his daughters in a shipwreck, and wrote this when as he journeyed the same path his daughters had traveled days before that ended in them loosing their lives. I can’t even imagine.
If you haven’t heard this hymn, I suggest you search it out and listen to it. I am not usually one for traditional hymns, but this one is so profound to me. I get goosebumps every time I hear it. We sang this at a number of funerals for lost family members, and through the tears, I remember feeling a deep sense of peace in my heart for a moment. Like letting go of a deep breath of fresh air. Seeing this sign and reflecting on it brings me that same peace. What an amazing thing to have in your home to remind yourself to reconcile your struggles with your soul and allow yourself to find peace.
Whatever lot of struggles you are going through in your life today, know that God promises that peace beyond our understanding can be found through him. When something becomes well with your soul, you can accept it, and it can lift the burden of sorrow. That is when healing can occur.
And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, shall keep your hearts, your minds through Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:7.
